Oil Stock Rotation 042808

Filed under: Stock Sector — Online Stock Trading @ 9:38 pm

Oil stocks moved down again today after gapping lower at the open. OIH doesn’t have any real support until around 188. The 20 day moving average should stall the fall here. It feels like we’re getting rotation out of a sector that’s been leading for three years now. Time will tell.

I’m trading DUG to catch the decline in oil stocks. Volume on the daily chart of DUG has increased on the up days which is bullish. The higher low pivot on the daily and buy signal today had me looking for an entry on a lower time frame.

I tried the buy signal on the 5-minute intraday chart, but was stopped out. I’ll be limiting the amount of charts I’m focusing on in the future, because I failed to buy the 15-minute chart’s buy signal. It worked.

Tomorrow the fed decision should stir up volatility.

Sector Study - Nasdaq Aggies and Gold 042808

Filed under: Stock Sector — Online Stock Trading @ 9:11 pm

Trading volatility dried up today, as the Nasdaq trades against it’s trendline resistance, and awaits the fed decision on rate cuts this Wednesday. A small push through that trendline won’t really mean much here, if it occurs before the fed announcement. The decision should create a significant enough move in the market to know whether a breakout is going to hold.

Agriculture stocks took a pounding today, reversing the bounce from Friday. I’m still more inclined to wait for stocks AGU, MON, MOS, and TRA to set up buy signals, rather than trying to short them.

Gold stocks are still struggling since spot gold touched $1000 and retreated. AEM is a top trader on my list. It’s found minor support here. I traded it this morning long using a 5-min chart, and higher high buy signal. The stock and the sector stalled at day’s high, and just couldn’t move higher later. I’ve got no bias on the sector’s direction here.
